Throughout the sound lesson we were taught how important sound is for dialogue and to truly be able to tell a story. With sound you're able to truly emphasize the characters feelings and situation of certain scenes. This could be with music, background noises etc. Techniques we were taught include, diegetic, synchronous, non-diegetic, voiceover, sound perspective, sound bridge, etc. Foley sounds was another technique we were taught and were a big part of our assignment. We learned when to use them and how they're made.
For this assignment we were asked to create a 1-2 minute only sound video that told a story. We needed to layer different sounds found in different websites while including a minimum of 4 of our own foley sounds. It needed to be realistic and could use a maximum of 7 words throughout the whole story. The purpose was to learn how to tell a story using only sound and other auditory techniques.
Walking into this assignment we started by brainstorming. We created a short story that would be easy to understand with only sound, wasn’t boring, and included many different sounds. We made many drafts and got many ideas until we got our final product. We struggled on coming up with so many sounds to reach the time span we were asked to reach without it getting repetitive. The outline of the story allowed me and my partner to be able to think of a certain amount of sounds for each scene which later on helped us structure the story and fix some details that wouldn’t make sense being just sound. This also made the editing process easier since we already knew what we were looking or and what we needed to add. For the sounds, we utilized, YouTube, Freesound, and Pixabay.
Personally I think we did really well on creating the storyboard and deciding what sounds fitted and which ones didn’t. We were able to agree on basic sounds that made sense with our situation without making it confusing. We did well with our time on the brainstorming but slowed down with the editing which we struggled a bit more with. Once we understood how the website worked and what to do, we split the project and worked together to get it done. For next time I would probably take more time on the editing section as I feel you don't realize how long it takes until you're doing it. Although I do tik that now that we understand how it works, we will be able to edit mor smoothly and clearly.
