One Word Film
For this assignment, we were instructed to create a 1-1 ½ minute short film, telling a story based off of a single word that the audience could understand by the way that word was utilized. We weren’t allowed to use any sort of dialogue, or music with lyrics. It was intended to help us expand and challenge us to different shots/angels and mostly editing, something we had recently been exposed to.
We started off this assignment with brainstorming. Our word was reminiscence so we made sure to explore different ways to express this in such a short time span. Our first brainstorming sheet was completely different from our final product. Even though we thought we could make it work. We cam to an agreement it would b to complicated and long for such a short time. We came to the conclusion to making a more simple, more self-explanatory, story. Even though out brainstorm sheet used different characters then the ones used, it was a similar storyline.
We then moved on to the storyboard sheet which helped us pre-visualize. It gave us an idea on what our project would end up looking like and made the filming process quicker. When looking at the storyboard it helped us establish new ideas and different shots that could make the film clearer. While filming we were able to look at the storyboard and immediately move quickly giving us more time for editing. We utilized iMovie for the edition process which made the edition process simpler then some other resources. We were able to edit smoothly and which patience the clips ended up falling into place creating the storyline.
After all the time put into this assignment, we finally had a finished product we were happy with. Analyzing this further we personally think we utilized the shots in a correctly manner and were able to accomplish telling a clear story on reminiscence. I also think we made correct editing choices such as making flashbacks black and white, and making the final flashback slow motion which really helped show the importance of that scene. Although we had some really great ideas, we also had some not so bright ones which ended up being a fail. The biggest fail we had was attempting to do the focus pull shot which we quickly realized was do to the lighting and background. Next time we would also probably give ourselves more working time by getting done the brainstorming and story board faster, which surprisingly took us way too long, and rather focus and shooting and editing.
